Pete’s “George and Mary Hatch Bailey”

Pete’s 2010 FJ Cruiser was bought new with the factory off-road package. Then began the transformation of “Mary Hatch Bailey” to a daily driver capable of overlanding (long trips exploring and camping).

Body protection includes A DeMello front bumper holding a Bulldog 9500lb winch, rock sliders, and All-pro skids.  A hi-lift jack, shovel and Maxtrax round out Mary’s recovery gear.

Clearance for the 315/75R16 (approx 35x12.5") Nitto Grapplers is provided by Walker Evans Racing adjustable coilovers in the front and a Metal Tech long travel suspension in the rear.

Toys to make the overlanding easier include a snorkel, rock cameras with a 7" LCD display, a 10” Android tablet for navigation using BackCountry Navigator with an external Bluetooth GPS antenna, front and rear dashcams, a ScanGauge, CB and HAM radios, a Wilson 3G cell phone booster, a CO2 Power Tank, Viair onboard air, dual batteries, Rigid LEDs, and onboard US/Canada LTE Wifi.

Next came “George Bailey” (carrying on the theme from the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”), a 2011 Jurgens trailer imported from South Africa via the US through a military trailer testing facility in Clintonville WI (a long campfire story). With torsion axles, and a 360 degree hitch the trailer can follow the Cruiser anywhere it will fit.

Amenities include a fold-up kitchen and 7ft table, 70l of water connected to an electric tap and sink, an ARB fridge, two 20 pound propane tanks, a propane BBQ and stove, and two 20 liter gas cans. It also has a Magnum inverter that puts out household voltage to numerous plugs inside and outside of the trailer. Dual deep cycle batteries, a power connection to the Cruiser, and a solar panel can keep everything running for days.

The trailer originally had a large Roof Top Tent that slept up to 10 adults but it took nearly an hour to set up, and eventually it was sold in favor of a smaller 2-man RTT.

Both George and Mary are works in progress, and Pete and his wife spend a lot of time traveling around with them, most often to Moab UT.

Pete is also involved in the 4WD event Cascadia Expodition held in Chilliwack, BC.
